The core material and manufacturing process are nearly identical to heating pellets — the difference is quality control aimed at absorbency and dust reduction rather than calorific value.

How they’re made — and why that matters for cats

Litter-grade biomass pellets go through four stages: raw sawdust is dried down to a low moisture content, ground to a uniform particle size, compressed under high pressure and heat with no added binders, and then cooled and screened to remove fine dust. The heat generated during compression is high enough to sterilize the material, and because no glue, resin, or chemical binder is used, the finished pellet is just wood — nothing else.

That last point is the one that matters most for pet safety. Reputable pellets are also kiln-dried, a heat process that drives off the natural phenols and resin oils found in raw pine, which can otherwise irritate a cat’s skin or airways. A pellet that hasn’t been kiln-dried is a fuel pellet, not a litter pellet — a distinction worth checking before you buy.

Where pellet litter falls short

A fair 2026 guide doesn’t stop at the upside. Biomass pellet litter has three real trade-offs worth knowing before you buy a bag.

  • Most varieties don’t clump. Instead of forming a scoopable clump, pellets absorb urine and dissolve into loose sawdust that sifts to the bottom of the tray. It’s not worse, but it is a different cleaning routine — you sift and reverse-scoop rather than scoop clumps directly.
  • Texture can be a dealbreaker for some cats. Pellets are firmer and coarser underfoot than fine clay. Cats with sensitive paws, kittens, or long-time clay users sometimes resist the switch, especially if it happens too fast.
  • Upfront cost can run higher. Premium pellet litter is often priced above budget clay per bag, even though better absorbency can offset that difference over months of use.

3. Keep the tray in its usual spot

Changing litter type and location at the same time doubles the adjustment your cat has to make. Move one variable at a time.

4. Fill shallow, not deep

A layer just deep enough to cover the tray base is enough — pellets expand as they absorb, so overfilling creates unnecessary mess.

5. Sift daily, full change every 3–4 weeks

Remove solids and spent sawdust daily, top up with fresh pellets, and empty and clean the tray fully about once a month for one cat.

A safety note worth reading

Not every wood pellet on the market is litter-safe. The critical checkpoint is whether the pellet has been kiln-dried — a heat treatment that removes the natural phenol oils in raw pine, which can otherwise be irritating to a cat’s skin and respiratory tract. Fuel-grade pellets sold for stoves and boilers are not automatically screened to the same standard as litter-grade product, so it’s worth confirming a bag is explicitly sold or certified for pet use before switching.

Beyond that, pellets should be stored in a cool, dry, ventilated space. Because they’re compressed so tightly, a large stockpile can off-gas small amounts of carbon monoxide if kept in a poorly ventilated area — the same handling guidance that applies to bulk heating pellets.
