Will I need to modify my existing coal boiler?

In most cases, no. Fixed-grate and step-grate stoker boilers — the type used in the majority of Indian industrial and process-heat applications — can burn biomass pellets with little to no structural change. The usual adjustment is a re-tune of the fuel feed rate and primary/secondary air dampers to match the pellets’ combustion characteristics.

Furnaces originally designed only for pulverised coal, or highly specialised feed systems, may need a retrofit. A short site visit is usually enough to tell you which category your boiler falls into before you commit to anything.

How much can we actually save compared to coal?

Ask any supplier for a certificate of analysis with delivery, and request a sample batch before your first bulk order — a supplier confident in their process won’t hesitate to provide either.

What’s the minimum order quantity, and can we trial it first?

Minimum order quantities vary by supplier and by how the pellets are sourced, but a smaller trial order before a recurring monthly contract is standard practice across the industry. What happens during monsoon season — can supply keep up?

It should, if the supplier has planned for it. Agricultural residue is harvested seasonally, roughly October to February, so reliable manufacturers build up several months of covered, moisture-controlled inventory ahead of the monsoon rather than sourcing hand-to-mouth. That inventory strategy is exactly what keeps production and dispatch running through the wet months.

Are there compliance or environmental penalties for moving away from coal?

None — the regulatory direction runs the other way. Biomass fuel is treated as carbon-neutral, and India’s clean-energy and industrial-emissions policy has been steadily nudging heat-intensive industries toward renewable fuel sources. Reducing coal dependence generally strengthens a plant’s compliance position rather than complicating it, and can support ESG and sustainability reporting where that matters to your buyers.

How should biomass pellets be stored, and how long do they last?

Pellets are compact and stable, but they are still an organic material — keep them dry, off the ground, and in a ventilated space away from direct moisture. Handled that way, quality industrial pellets hold their calorific value and structural integrity for well over a year, which makes forward inventory planning straightforward rather than risky.

What if a delivered batch doesn’t meet our specifications?

It should never be your problem to absorb. A supplier that stands behind its process will replace an off-spec batch or issue credit against the certificate of analysis for that delivery, no lengthy dispute required.
